Shadow Request for Applicants

All Radiation Therapy applicants must complete a clinical shadow experience before applying. It is recommended that applicants complete a shadow in advance, as soon as they identify an interest in applying to the program.

(Note: MS in Medical Dosimetry applicants should not use this form, and should instead schedule a virtual demonstration.)

The Radiation Therapy shadow will require at least 2 hours of your time and consists of observing ARRT-registered radiation therapists at work to assure your suitability for the career you are pursuing. If RT shadow experiences are not available in your area, please contact the Office of Graduate Admission for guidance.

Applicant Clinical Shadow Policy

In addition to submitting the required documents listed below, applicants will:

Meet with Suffolk staff or a clinical representative at the beginning of their shadow.
Be provided with a lab coat, which they will wear throughout the duration of their shadow.
Observers may be provided with an observer badge, which they will wear throughout the duration of their shadow.
Upon completion of their shadow, return the lab coat to Suffolk University's Samia Building, 6th floor.

Applicants will not need to wear a radiation safety badge (per the MGH and BWH/DFCI Radiation Safety Offices)

Clinical Shadow Dress Code Policy

The dress code in the clinic should reflect a high level of professionalism, which inspires
confidence among the patients and co-workers.

1) Dress clothes (business casual, suit not required), no jeans and nothing too short or revealing. No scrubs.

2) Comfortable dress shoes with appropriate hosiery/socks. Dress boots below the knee with a low heel is acceptable. Work boots, snow boots or rain boots are prohibited in the clinic setting.(No open toe shoes or sandals for safety reasons.)

3) Jewelry should be kept to a minimum. (No long, dangling accessories)

4) A clean, ironed lab coat identifying you as a Suffolk University student. (Provided by the Suffolk Radiation Science)

5) Hands, fingernails, and hair must be kept clean at ALL times.
Fingernails: Must be kept short. Chipped fingernail polish is not allowed.
Hair: Must be combed. Shoulder length hair must be pulled back.
Facial Hair: Beards or other facial hair must be groomed.

6) Piercing jewelry should be kept small.

7) Perfume, strong scented lotion, cologne, and after-shave are not permitted.

Lab coats are provided at the time of shadow by Suffolk Radiation Science. Please indicate your lab coat size.

Required Documents

Several documents are required to coordinate your clinic shadow. Students doing the remote demonstration are not required to upload any of these documents, as they will not be in a clinical setting.
