Many SARS-CoV-2 diagnostic tests are available, and many more are gaining emergency approval. This mini class will explore the roles of the relevant federal agencies—the Food and Drug Administration, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services—in developing and approving diagnostic tests, providing scientific guidance and expertise to clinicians and laboratories regarding testing, and assuring the accuracy, reliability, and timeliness of test results.  In addition, the class will examine the strengths and weaknesses of the different diagnostic tests currently used by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health and other clinical laboratories and will identify and discuss the tests recommended for surveillance testing. Participants will learn how to interpret the metrics used for these diagnostic tests, including sensitivity, specificity, and positive and negative predictive values.
